Cycling in the South Öland Farming Landscape World Heritage Site

5-day cycling package on southern Öland with good bikes, food and accommodation at some of southern Öland's best hotels.

The island of sun and wind invites you to fantastic experiences on two wheels! On Öland you will find strikingly beautiful nature, rich history, open views, old fishing harbours, lots of local crafts and charming farm shops. With carefully selected hotels and experiences, you can now enjoy the diverse landscape of southern Öland by bike. The landscape is designated as one of UNESCO World Heritage Site which, with its limestone and unique flora and fauna, differs from the rest of Sweden. Here you will find the barren Stora Alvaret, the beach meadows that have been grazed since time immemorial, the unspoilt terraced villages and very fertile farmland. 

The package includes

  • Bike to use for four days. Choose between el-, touring, tandem or 3-speed standard bike. For an additional cost, it is also possible to get a side-by-side electric bike.

Day plan

1 - Day of arrival

Arrival at Hotel Magasin 1 in Mörbylånga with check-in from 14.00. If you arrive early, you will have the opportunity to stroll around Mörbylånga's cosy neighbourhood, take a swim or enjoy freshly baked buns and cookies at Café Söderbönor. There is also the opportunity to soften your body for tomorrow's bike ride in the hotel's newly built relaxation centre with sauna, seating areas for relaxation and an outdoor whirlpool. Can be booked on site at the reception or notified to the hotel in advance. 3-course dinner with local ingredients is served from 17:00.

You pick up your bike at Ölands Cykeluthyrning which is located right next to the hotel, our opening hours can be found at here. We adapt the model and correct the settings according to your wishes and inform you about the tour. 

Transport to the starting point: Bus 105 from Kalmar C goes once an hour to Mörbylånga bus station, which is located right next to Hotel Magasin 1 and Öland's bike rental. For those who come by car, there is free parking outside the hotel and bike rental. The address is Järnvägsgatan 3, Mörbylånga. 

2 - Travelling (30-40 km)

From Mörbylånga you cycle south on small roads along the water to Kastlösa. Here you turn off to the east and cycle on the old railway embankment across the large Alvaret until you are met by the magnificent view of the Baltic Sea. Here you can go for a swim at the charming Sebybadet. Another kilometre to the south you will find genuine Gammalsbygårdens Gästgiveri where a well-prepared 3-course dinner and comfortable beds await. Those who appreciate wines should take the opportunity to enjoy something good from the wine cellar. However, this is not included in the package.

3 - Discovery day (35-45 km)

There is much to experience on the southernmost part of Öland. Here you can choose where your energy and desire for discovery takes you. Visit the famous Eketorp Castle or the magical Södra Udden with its vast pastures for sheep, cows and deer. You'll also find one of Europe's best bird sanctuaries and Sweden's highest lighthouse, Long John. Despite tired bike legs, the 198 steps up to the lighthouse are well worth the view around the southernmost tip of Öland! In Grönhögen you will find a charming little community with both a golf course, ICA shop, café and restaurant. Take a dip in the deep, turquoise limestone quarry if you dare. Return to Gammalsbygården for another good night's sleep and tasty dinner.

4 - On the trail of history (50-60 km)

Today you will cycle northwards along eastern Öland, passing through The nature shop in Stenåsa, which has Sweden's largest range of binoculars and other nature-related products. There is also the possibility of making a detour to the famous Sandby Borg where a brutal massacre took place about 1,500 years ago. here you can learn more about the history of the castle. At Gårby café and farm shop you can take a much-needed break and enjoy a real gofika. Then follow the winding roads through Midland forestwhich is one of the largest continuous deciduous forests in Europe. At the edge of the forest you will find the research station Station Linné, world-famous for its research on insects in particular. On the fourth night you sleep on Hotel Skansen in Färjestaden and are also treated to a 3-course dinner. An evening walk in the harbour with a view of the Öland Bridge at sunset is recommended.

5 - Finish (20-30 km)

There is a nice cycle path from Färjestaden to Mörbylånga. Take the opportunity to admire one of Sweden's most famous rune stones, Karlevi stones. It is possible to take the small roads through the beautiful Vickleby Nature Reserve and the Beijer Harbour with its fine bird sanctuary. Vickleby where the famous craft school Capella farm and "Sweden's most beautiful village street" is well worth a detour. By 18:30 at the latest, the bikes are returned to Ölands Cykeluthyrning in Mörbylånga. 

Pavement and traffic

The tour is mostly on paved cycle paths and country roads. A total of 10 km are on gravel roads. As it is not high season, the traffic is low-intensity, but you can expect to share the road with tractors, caravans, cows and sheep.

  • Two people in a double room 8 000 SEK per person 
  • Single room supplement + 1 200 SEK
  • Upgrade to an electric pair bike (you sit next to each other) + €2,500

Booking request

You are welcome to send a booking request via the form below. This is an exclusive package with limited availability so don't wait too long to book. The package can be booked starting during the periods 1 April - 27 June, 23 August - 12 September and 14 September - 31 October. Once you have sent your enquiry, we will respond within 24 hours. If the request is approved, you will receive a payment link by email that you need to pay within 24 hours for the booking to be valid. The booking becomes binding only when the payment is made.

Conditions

  • If cancelled at least 48 hours before the date of arrival, 90 % of the cost will be refunded. If cancelled later, no refund will be given.
  • If you need assistance on the road, for example with a new bike or if you have suffered a physical injury, we will come to your rescue, usually within an hour and a half, but in exceptional cases up to 5 hours. 
  • Full insurance of the bike is included for normal use, but not any insurance for clothing or personal injury.
